Most people reading this arrived after searching for a microcurrent device, which is the right instinct, because microcurrent is a real technology with real research behind it.
The useful question is not whether microcurrent works, it is what each device is allowed to do once the current is switched on.
What 680 microamps buys you
FOREO publishes a maximum of 680 microamps for BEAR 2, and that figure is genuinely high for the microcurrent category, where plenty of devices sit in the low hundreds.
FOREO is also one of the few brands that publishes a number at all, which deserves credit, because NuFACE does not publish one for the Trinity+ and ZIIP publishes no output figure anywhere.
A maximum is a ceiling rather than a description of the whole session, so it tells you what the device can reach and not what it delivers minute by minute.
The Anti-Shock System 2.0 measures skin moisture and current resistance 200 times a second and adjusts delivery to match, which is a sensible comfort feature and one of the reasons the device feels consistent.
BEAR 2 also offers five T-Sonic massage patterns, and those pulsations are mechanical vibration rather than electrical stimulation, so they change how the treatment feels rather than what the current reaches.
None of that is a criticism, it is simply the boundary of the category: BEAR 2 is a well-made microcurrent device, and microcurrent is what it does.
Where microcurrent stops
Microcurrent is measured in millionths of an amp, and at that scale the current is talking to skin cells rather than to the nerves that drive muscle.
Laboratory work shows that defined small currents change how skin cells behave, affecting fibroblast migration, energy production and collagen-related signalling, with the response depending on the exact settings used.
Pooled randomised trials in wound care, covering seven studies and 337 people, found that adding microcurrent to standard care helped wounds close faster (Avendano-Coy 2022), which is the strongest clinical support the low-current category has.
Facial studies are smaller and none has yet used a sham comparison, though they report improvements in wrinkle scores, dermal density and texture (Saniee 2012).
What none of that research shows is a muscle moving, because at microamp levels the muscle is not being asked to do anything.
If your concern is dullness, texture or the look of fine lines, that is genuinely microcurrent territory and BEAR 2 sits in it comfortably.

The eight levels after microcurrent
Electrical muscle stimulation delivers enough current to fire the nerve that drives a facial muscle, and you can watch it happen in the mirror.
Around forty small muscles sit under the skin of your face, held inside a connected sheet called the SMAS, and those muscles are what give your face its shape.
Engaging them repeatedly is how EMS supports the appearance of a firmer, more defined jawline, cheek and neck with continued use.
In the largest facial trial of its kind, 108 women used facial muscle stimulation daily for twelve weeks, and ultrasound showed an 18.6 percent increase in cheek-muscle thickness, with clear differences from the untreated group at six weeks and clearer at twelve (Kavanagh 2012).
A double-blind, sham-controlled trial in adults over 65 found muscle thickness and bite force increased after six weeks (Chang 2020), and CT imaging in a later study showed the muscle around the eye thickening after eight weeks (Okuda 2026).
One split-face study makes the point better than any comparison chart, because the microcurrent side improved eye-wrinkle volume and dermal density while the EMS side improved lifting measures, which is two currents doing two different jobs on one face (Kwak 2023).
Those are category studies using their own devices and protocols, so they show what facial muscle stimulation can do rather than what PureLift Face did.
Peak output, in context
BEAR 2 reaches 680 microamps and PureLift Face reaches 7 milliamps, which is 7,000 microamps, making the maximum-output difference about ten times.
That ratio matters less than what it crosses, because the useful boundary is the motor threshold rather than any particular number.
A device that stops below that threshold can support skin quality and cannot move a muscle, however carefully it delivers its current.
Output figures are measured at 500 ohms and consumer copy says up to, because the current that actually reaches you depends on contact, placement and your own tissue.
Why the signal matters as much as the number
Sending a muscle the same fixed signal for ten minutes invites it to get used to that signal, and your nerves get used to it too.
PDM, the stimulation architecture inside every PureLift including Face, keeps the signal moving across 361 frequency points between 1,370 and 1,730 Hz, so the tenth minute is designed to feel like the first.
Pooling 22 studies, researchers found that stimulation which keeps changing produced more evoked force with less fatigue than a fixed pattern (Cavalcante 2026), and a randomised crossover trial found that varying the frequency reduced how quickly people habituated to it (Avendano-Coy 2019).

What PureLift Face does not have
Face is a current-only device, which means Lift is its single mode, and there is no Infuse pass and no light on board.

Against BEAR 2 at $399, Face loses nothing by having no light, since BEAR 2 has no light either.

Both devices need a conductive medium, so the purchase price is not the whole cost.
