If your under eye bags are morning fluid, a session helps; if they are herniated orbital fat, no device on the market will shift them.
This article sets out what to check before you start, such as:
- the three different problems people call eye bags
- the simple test that tells them apart
- what the orbital muscle research actually showed
- how close to the eye it is safe to work
- when the honest answer is a surgeon
and many more!
We will tell you plainly if your situation is the one no device addresses, because selling you a device for it would be a waste of your money.
Key Points:
Morning puffiness is fluid, responds to pressure and direction within the session, and is the one presentation a facial device genuinely helps.
Herniated orbital fat is a structural change where the fat pad behind the eye pushes forward through a weakened barrier, and no current, light or massage reverses it.
Hollowing under the eye casts a shadow people read as a bag, and it needs volume rather than toning.
Work around the orbital bone, never on the eyelid itself, and drop the level well below what you use on the cheek.
Lower eyelid surgery is the treatment for true herniated fat, and a consultation costs you nothing to find out.
Three problems, one name
Fluid is the first: your face has been horizontal for eight hours, lymph has pooled in the thin tissue under the eye, and the swelling settles through the morning on its own.
Herniated orbital fat is the second: the fat that cushions the eye sits behind a thin barrier of connective tissue, and when that barrier weakens the fat pushes forward into a permanent bulge.
Hollowing is the third: volume loss under the eye and over the cheekbone creates a depression, and the shadow it casts reads as a bag even though nothing is protruding.
The three look similar in a mirror and respond completely differently, which is why so much advice about eye bags contradicts itself.
The test that tells them apart
Look in the mirror first thing in the morning and again at four in the afternoon. If the bag has shrunk noticeably, you are dealing with fluid.
If it is identical at both times, and identical when you lie down and when you stand, it is structural.
Press gently with a fingertip. Fluid gives and takes a moment to refill, a fat pad resists and springs back immediately.
Pull the skin of your lower lid gently sideways. If the bulge flattens and the problem becomes a depression, you are looking at hollowing rather than protrusion.
What helps fluid
Direction and light pressure, finishing toward the ear and down the neck, because that is where the fluid drains. Our sessions run ten minutes with three minutes per side at most.
Sleeping with your head slightly raised, which addresses the cause rather than the result.
Cold, which constricts the small vessels and reduces the leak.
A chilled spoon or a cool gua sha stone does much of this for almost nothing, which we have said before in our article on drainage and will keep saying.
What the orbital muscle research showed
Okuda and colleagues in 2026 used CT imaging to examine the orbital muscle and the structures around the eye, which is the kind of direct measurement this category rarely has.
The orbicularis oculi is a ring of muscle around the eye, it is thin, and it is the muscle any stimulation near the eye will reach first.
Toning it changes how the ring sits, and it does not move a fat pad that has herniated past its barrier, because those are different tissues doing different things.
So the research supports working the area for muscle tone, and it does not support a claim about structural bags, and we are not going to blur the two.
Working safely near the eye
Stay on the bone. The orbital rim you can feel with a fingertip is the boundary, and the eyelid itself is not a place for a probe.
Drop the level several steps below your cheek setting, because the tissue is thin and the muscle underneath is small.
A brief flutter of the lid means the orbicularis is responding and the level is at or slightly above where it should be for that area.
Stop if you get any visual change, pain or lasting discomfort, and read our article on what the sensations mean.
When the answer is a surgeon
True herniated orbital fat is corrected by lower eyelid surgery, performed by an oculoplastic or plastic surgeon, and there is no home equivalent.
Hollowing is corrected with filler or fat transfer, and under the eye is a technically demanding area where the practitioner matters more than the product.
Either consultation is free or inexpensive and will tell you in five minutes what months of device use would not.
If a brand page tells you its device removes under eye bags without distinguishing fluid from fat, it is selling you something that will not work, and ours will keep making the distinction.
This article sits inside our full map of the category, where we set out all 33 devices we track, what each one carries and what each brand publishes: Nine Technologies on One Dial, What the Rest of the Market Actually Carries.
