The best supported microcurrent facial benefit is firmer, more toned facial muscles that give a more lifted look with regular use, while claims about collagen, ATP and wrinkle removal rest on much weaker evidence.
This article ranks each benefit by the strength of its evidence, such as:
- a firmer, more lifted look along the jaw and cheeks
- a brighter, more awake look right after a session
- better absorption of serums
- the collagen and ATP claims
- what microcurrent does not do
and many more!
We make microcurrent devices, so we have been as strict about our own claims as about anyone else's.
Key Points:
The strongest evidence is for muscle tone, from a randomized controlled trial of facial electrical stimulation run over twelve weeks.
An immediate lifted, awake look after a session is commonly reported but fades within hours to a day.
The ATP claim comes from a 1982 laboratory study on rat skin, not from human faces.
Collagen claims for at-home microcurrent lack strong human evidence.
Microcurrent does not tighten loose skin, restore lost volume or erase deep lines.
Benefit one, firmer and more toned facial muscles
This is the benefit with the strongest support. A randomized controlled trial by Kavanagh and colleagues, published in 2012, measured the effect of facial electrical stimulation on the facial muscles after twelve weeks of regular use.
The visible result is a firmer jaw and a more lifted cheek and brow. The research is summarized in our article on what the research says.
Benefit two, a lifted, more awake look after a session
Most people see a short-lived lift straight after a session, mostly around the jaw and cheekbones, which fades within hours to a day.
It is a useful pick-me-up before an event but not the lasting result.
Benefit three, a more defined jawline
Because the jaw muscles sit close to the surface, the jawline is often the first place a change shows. See our jawline device guide.
Benefit four, better serum absorption
Some devices, including ours, have an infusion setting designed to help a water-based serum absorb. This is a separate function from muscle toning.
The claims with weaker evidence
ATP
The claim that microcurrent raises ATP traces to a 1982 laboratory study on rat skin, not human faces. See our ATP article.
Collagen
Claims that home microcurrent builds collagen lack strong human evidence, and we do not make them for our devices.
Wrinkles
Microcurrent may soften the look of expression lines over time, but it does not erase deep lines. See our wrinkles article.
Who benefits most
People in their thirties and older who notice a softer jawline or a slight drop in the cheeks and brows, since muscle tone is what microcurrent works on.
People who want a non-invasive routine with no downtime, who can commit to several short sessions a week.
People who already use injectables and want a routine between appointments, after checking timing with their provider.
People who benefit least are those whose main concern is loose skin, lost volume or deep etched lines.
Benefits in your thirties
The aim is maintenance, keeping muscle tone where it is with two or three sessions a week once the first twelve weeks are done.
Benefits in your forties and fifties
The aim is a visible lift along the jaw and cheeks, with five sessions a week to start and a realistic view of what muscle work can change.
Benefits for men
The jaw is usually the focus, and a stronger EMS setting on the same dial suits people who want a visible muscle contraction.
How microcurrent compares with other options
Compared with facial exercises, a device works the muscles without relying on your own effort and form.
Compared with EMS alone, microcurrent is gentler, and a device that offers both lets you choose. See our EMS versus microcurrent article.
Compared with injectables, microcurrent works on muscle tone rather than relaxing muscles or adding volume, so the two do different jobs.
What microcurrent does not do
It does not tighten loose or crepey skin.
It does not replace lost volume.
It does not give permanent results, since the effect fades if you stop.
How to get the benefits
Use a device four or five times a week for eight to twelve weeks, then two or three times a week to maintain.
Our devices run nanocurrent at level 1, microcurrent at level 2 and EMS from level 3 to 10, plus an Infuse pass, on one dial, with a ten minute session and no more than three minutes per side of the face.
Expected timing is in our article on how long microcurrent takes to work, and safety in our side effects article.
Do not use any facial current device if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, if you are pregnant or if you have epilepsy, and skip broken or irritated skin. The full list is in our safety article.
Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of a microcurrent facial
The best supported benefit is firmer, more toned facial muscles and a more lifted look with regular use, plus a short-lived lift after each session.
Does microcurrent build collagen
Strong human evidence for at-home microcurrent building collagen is lacking.
Does microcurrent increase ATP
The ATP claim comes from a 1982 laboratory study on rat skin, not human faces.
Are microcurrent results permanent
No. The result is maintained with regular sessions and fades gradually if you stop.
How long does it take to see microcurrent benefits
An immediate lift fades within a day, while the lasting change usually shows after four to eight weeks of regular sessions.
