Professional-Grade Facial EMS, Without the Clinic
Professional-grade facial EMS, without the clinic.
Real milliamp-range electrical muscle stimulation, a 1.37–1.73 kHz operating band and Dynamic Modulation™ across 361 frequencies, in a controlled 10-minute treatment. This is why most at-home "lifting tools" cannot lift, and how to choose one that can.

Most devices look identical. The technology inside is not.
The useful question is not "which device is strongest?" but "which tissue is it designed to affect, and how is its energy delivered?" Microcurrent works in millionths of an ampere, below the threshold to make a muscle contract. Real EMS works in thousandths. That is the difference between massaging the skin and training the muscle beneath it.
| Technology class | Current range | Effect | What you feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nanocurrent (e.g. Ziip) | Billionths of an ampere (nA) | Theoretical cellular signalling | Nothing |
| Microcurrent (NuFACE, Foreo) | Millionths of an ampere (µA) | Cellular-level support | Little to nothing |
| EMS — PureLift This | Up to 9 mA · 1,370–1,730 Hz | Direct motor-neuron activation, full muscle contraction | Visible muscle engagement |
EMS is the technology physiotherapists use to rehabilitate muscle after surgery, and which NASA began testing on the ISS in 2025 to counter muscle atrophy. The face has ~43 muscles of expression connected to the skin through the SMAS; when they are trained, the skin lifts with them.
Dynamic Modulation™ across 361 frequencies
PureLift operates between 1,370 and 1,730 Hz. Rather than locking to one fixed carrier frequency, Dynamic Modulation™ moves continuously across 361 points within that band, so the nervous system can't predict the pattern and the muscle can't adapt.
Triple-Wave™ describes the waveform itself: a low-frequency component for comfort, a mid for the dermis and a high for deep muscle reach. Triple-Wave™ is what the waves are; Dynamic Modulation™ is how they are varied. The band descends from the Kots "Russian Current" research lineage chosen for deep recruitment at low discomfort.

What the clearance establishes
FDA 510(k) clearance means the device was reviewed for substantial equivalence to a legally marketed predicate for its stated intended use. It is not an endorsement of every marketing claim and should not be described as FDA "approval".
Build: link each clearance number to its exact record on the official FDA 510(k) database before publication.

Same 9 mA. Different architecture.
A small number of devices are genuine EMS. PureLift originally manufactured the device FaceGym sold as FaceGym Pro, for years, in Japan. The current FaceGym Pro is separately made in China; the brand continued, the engineering source changed.
Inside the category, Pro + and FaceGym Pro both reach 9 mA. How that 9 mA is delivered is everything.

What facial EMS produces in published trials
18.6%
Mean increase in zygomaticus major thickness over 12 weeks, assessor-blinded ultrasound. Kavanagh, Newell et al. (2012), J. Cosmetic Dermatology, RCT, 108 women.
Elasticity & sagging
Significant improvements in skin elasticity, sagging and double-chin lifting vs cosmetic-only control. Shin & Park (2022), four-week clinical study, 22 women.
High > low intensity
"Results do not support low-intensity or battery-powered stimulators when the goal is muscle-force recovery." Snyder-Mackler et al. (1995), JBJS.
These are facial-NMES and NMES-category studies, not brand-to-brand PureLift trials.
No head-to-head clinical trial claims
There is no peer-reviewed study directly comparing PureLift with NuFACE, Foreo, Ziip, FaceGym Pro or any named competitor. The evidence here rests on the underlying science of each technology category, regulatory records, and the engineering difference between fixed and dynamically modulated stimulation, not brand-to-brand trials.
Frequently asked questions
Is PureLift microcurrent?
No. PureLift is real EMS, designed to create muscle contraction in the milliamp range. Some older retail and regulatory language uses broader electrical-stimulation or microcurrent terminology, so describe the mechanism precisely and consistently: this is EMS.
Does a stronger sensation mean a better device?
Not necessarily. Output, waveform, contact, current distribution and technique all affect what is felt. The objective is controlled, repeatable muscle engagement, not the most dramatic surface pull.
Why does frequency modulation matter?
A repeated electrical pattern becomes easy for the nervous system to anticipate (neural accommodation), and the muscle stops responding at full strength. PureLift varies frequency across 361 points to keep the muscle engaged from minute one to minute ten.
Is Pro + the strongest PureLift device?
Pro + lists up to 9 mA and ~29% more output than Face and Pro. GLOW shares the same 9 mA headline while adding red and blue LED on the PDM++ waveform.
Can I combine EMS with RF or LED?
The technologies address different layers and can be complementary; GLOW combines EMS and LED for exactly this reason. Follow the instructions and timing for each device, and consult a clinician for medical or skin concerns.
