Start twelve weeks before the date for the muscle result, and introduce nothing new to your skin in the final four weeks, which is the rule that prevents disasters.
This article sets out what to check before you start, such as:
- the twelve week countdown, week by week
- why the final month is for maintenance only
- what the morning of the wedding actually calls for
- the treatments with timing you cannot rush
- what to do if you have left it too late
and many more!
If you are four weeks out, the honest advice is to skip the device entirely and run the morning-of routine instead.
Key Points:
The published muscle result was measured at twelve weeks, so that is the honest lead time for a visible change in definition.
Never introduce a new active, a new device or a new treatment inside four weeks of the date, because reactions happen and recovery takes time.
Injectables have their own lead times, typically two weeks for toxin to settle and four or more for filler, set by your injector rather than by us.
On the morning itself, run a short low-level session for the depuffing effect rather than a full toning session.
The same-day effect is fluid and circulation, not muscle, and it lasts a few hours rather than all day.
The twelve week countdown
Weeks twelve to nine, build the habit
Start at a low level and work up over the first fortnight until you can see the muscle answer in the mirror.
Four or five sessions a week, ten minutes, three minutes per side at most.
Expect nothing visible in this phase. People who quit do so here, which is why knowing the timeline matters.
If you are also starting a retinoid, start it now rather than later, and keep the two on separate nights, covered in our retinol article.
Weeks eight to five, the working phase
This is where the first durable change usually appears, typically described as the jaw looking cleaner in photographs.
Keep the schedule steady. Doubling up does not accelerate muscle adaptation and increases the chance of irritation.
Kavanagh and colleagues in 2012 measured an 18.6 percent increase in cheek muscle thickness across twelve weeks, and this middle phase is where most of it accrues.
Book any resurfacing, peels or injectables now rather than later, so there is recovery time built in.
Weeks four to one, change nothing
No new products, no new devices, no first-time treatments, no experiments. This is the single most important rule in the article.
Keep doing exactly what you have been doing, at the same level and the same frequency.
Any reaction in this window has nowhere to recover, and skin reactions routinely take two to three weeks to settle fully.
If something stings or looks different, stop that one thing and go back to plain moisturizer rather than adding a fix.
The morning of
Run a short session at a low level, five to ten minutes, aimed at the fluid rather than the muscle.
Work upward and outward across the face and finish downward toward the collarbone, which is the direction fluid drains.
Keep the level well below your usual setting, because a flushed face is a real possibility and you want none of it on the day.
Finish with moisturizer and sunscreen, then makeup as usual. The depuffing effect holds best for the first few hours, which is when you need it.
The mechanism and its limits are set out honestly in our article on drainage claims.
The night before
Low salt dinner, because sodium draws water into tissue and shows on your face the next morning.
Little or no alcohol, which disrupts both fluid balance and sleep quality at the same time.
Sleep with your head slightly raised, which reduces how much fluid settles into the face overnight.
No new products, no extractions, no last-minute facial. This is the most common way people arrive at a wedding with a face they did not plan for.
Treatments with timing you cannot rush
Injectables
Botulinum toxin takes several days to take full effect and settles over about two weeks, so the last sensible appointment is three to four weeks out.
Filler swells initially and settles over several weeks, so four to six weeks out is the usual guidance.
If you have never had either, a wedding is the wrong occasion for a first appointment. Your injector sets all of these timings, not us, and the device timing around them is in our injectables article.
Resurfacing and peels
Light peels need two to three weeks, medium depth needs four to six, and anything ablative needs months.
Never book a first-time treatment inside eight weeks of the date.
A consultation now and a treatment well before the window is the sensible order.
If you have left it late
At four weeks or less, do not start a device for the muscle result, because it will not arrive in time and you are introducing a new variable into the no-change window.
What does work on short notice is sleep, hydration, reduced salt, sun protection and a consistent simple routine.
If you already own a device and have been using it, keep going exactly as you were.
If you were planning to buy one for the wedding specifically and the date is close, save the money. We would rather tell you that than take an order that cannot deliver, which is the same position as in our article on expensive devices.
What to expect realistically
Twelve weeks of consistent use produces better definition along the jaw and a slightly lifted midface, visible to you and in photographs taken in the same lighting.
It does not tighten skin, fill volume or remove lines, which are three different problems addressed by three different things.
The morning-of session produces a short-lived reduction in puffiness, which is real and temporary.
Set the expectation at looking like a well-rested version of yourself rather than a different person, and the routine delivers it.
Frequently asked questions
How long before a wedding should you start a skincare routine
Three to six months for anything involving collagen or muscle adaptation, with the final four weeks reserved for maintaining what you already do rather than introducing anything new.
Can you use microcurrent the morning of your wedding
Yes, at a low level and for a short session, aimed at reducing overnight puffiness rather than toning. Keep the level below your usual setting to avoid flushing.
How far in advance should you get Botox before a wedding
Typically three to four weeks, so it has fully settled and any asymmetry can be adjusted. Your injector sets the exact timing.
What should you not do before a wedding
Introduce any new product, device or treatment inside four weeks of the date. Reactions are common and skin needs two to three weeks to settle fully.
Does microcurrent work in two weeks
Not for the muscle result. The published trials measured outcomes at twelve weeks. Two weeks gives you the same-day depuffing effect only.
